Form of treated charcoal with small, low volume pores increasing available surface area and chemical absorption.
World Class Activated Carbon: Made from charcoal in coconut shells. The best properties are:
• High levels of hardness and low level of dust (ash). Improves material handling characteristics and especially important when carbon impurities cannot be tolerated.
• High surface area = long life + high absorption capacity.
• High retention preventing desorption of absorbed materials.
• Large fraction of micropores. This is important for the removal of low molecular weight organic compounds and for the removal of trace elements from contaminants.
Carbon Pulp (CEP) is used in most industrial applications where the presence of competing silver or copper does not preclude its use.
The activated charcoal acts as a sponge for the aurocyanide. The gold cyanide complex is absorbed by carbon until it reaches equilibrium with the gold in solution.
Removal of gold from carbon by high temperature “elution”: Solution of caustic soda (as electrolyte) and water which passes through an electro-winning cell, where the gold as well as other metals are attached to cathodes by electrolysis.
The activated carbon leach (CIL) process is similar to CIP except that the leaching and carbon loading are simultaneous.
