Also called Caustic Soda (NaOH): is a white solid salt, a highly caustic base, and an alkali that breaks down proteins at ordinary room temperatures. Sodium hydroxide is used in many scenarios where it is desirable to increase the alkalinity of a mixture or to neutralize acids.
When used for pH control, it competes with other alkalis, especially sodium carbonate (soda crystals). Common factors for the selection of caustic soda are stronger basicity as well as easier storage and handling.
